Biography of the Metal On 25 October 1940, as the Battle of Britain reached its desperate zenith, P7350 was scrambled with 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron to intercept a formation of German fighters. High above Hastings, the aircraft was bounced by Bf 109s and struck by devastating cannon fire that tore through the wing and wounded the pilot, Pilot Officer Ludwik Martel. Despite his injuries and a failing airframe, Martel fought to remain conscious and guided the smoking Spitfire through heavy cloud to a successful wheels-up crash landing in a Sussex field. The metal in this pin was present during that frantic descent, surviving both the heat of combat and the impact of the crash before being meticulously reclaimed during the aircraft's later restoration.
